Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland – National Park trail Hünenteichweg

Milestone Hünenteich in the Hainich National Park

In January 2016, the “Wanderweg Hünenteich“ was awarded as “Qualitätsweg Wanderbares Deutschland“ (Quality Trail Walkable Germany) in the category “Pleasure of nature” by the German Ramblers’ Association. It is thus the first Quality Trail with a length of less than 20 km with a thematic focus in Thuringia. And it is the very first across Germany which has been certified as “Pleasure of nature“.

Milestone Hünenteich in the Hainich National Park

The symbol, a frog, is representative of the amphibians in the Hünenteich. The frog concerts in spring and on warm summer evenings that can be heard over long distances are a true experience.

Starting from the parking lots Zollgarten or Fuchsfarm, the 6-km-long trail can easily be walked in about 2 hours. Sturdy shoes are recommended, however. The Hünenteich, a dammed sinkhole, is a rarity in the Hainich region which is low of waters. In early summer, you can marvel at the light yellow blossoms of the water iris.
