Arrival and mobility

The World Heritage Region Wartburg Hainich is rich of historic attractions, attractive destinations and impressive natural landscapes most of which can be reached by bus and train all year long. Owing to its favourable location in the middle of Germany and its good transport connections, this travel area without a doubt entails an enormous touristic potential. Bus lines used from Mondays to Fridays for going to school, to work or for running errands, on weekends and public holidays take both locals as well as visitors out into nature or to the cultural attractions.

Arriving by car:

By car, you can reach the World Heritage Region Wartburg Hainich most quickly by using the motorways A4, A7, A38 or A71. When using A4, it is recommended to take the exit Eisenach-Ost or Eisenach-West. Via A38, you can choose between the exits “Bleicherode“, “Breitenworbis“ or “Leinefelde-Worbis“ in order to reach your destination from the north. From A7 or A71, federal and country roads directly lead into the region. 

Arriving by train:

The World Heritage Region Wartburg Hainich is seamlessly connected to the regional and long-distance network of the Deutsche Bahn. The railway stations Eisenach, Bad Langensalza and Mühlhausen can easily be reached from any place in Germany. Several ICE and IC Lines stop at Eisenach every one or two hours. Arrival by bus:

The Wartburg City of Eisenach is integrated into the quickly growing long-distance bus network and can thus cheaply be reached from many German cities.

Furthermore, the dense route network of the transport companies provides the guests with comfortable and quick mobility. The World Heritage Region Wartburg Hainich may thus be detected quite effortless. Thanks to these possibilities, hikers and friends of culture reach their destinations without traffic jams or an unpleasant search for parking space.

On various routes, there are special offers for cyclists. Sitting comfortably in the bus, enjoying the beautiful landscape and having your bicycle transported on the bike rack – in this way you can overcome some differences in altitude without any efforts. The flyer “Mobility in the World Heritage Region“ can be used as guideline. It summarizes the timetables of the bus lines relevant for tourists and promises interesting advice for tourists along the respective route.

Special features

Travelling by electric car

Driving quietly and environmentally compatible through the unique nature. Everybody is talking about electric vehicles, but how is it to drive such a car? Travelers can now find the answer to this question during their holidays in the World Heritage Region Wartburg Hainich! At the central station in Eisenach, an electric car is available. Appropriate charging stations can also be found in the region. For example at the hikers’ parking lot Thiemsburg, directly at the crossover to the Canopy Walkway.

Destination Nature

The cooperation “Fahrtziel Natur” (Destination Nature) is jointly supported by the three major environmental associations BUND, NABU and VCD as well as by the Deutsche Bahn. Apart from the Hainich National Park, partners of the cooperation are another 21 national parks, nature parks and biosphere reserves in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. They commonly support environmentally compatible trips to local natural landscapes. Arrival and departure by train and the use of sustainable mobility offers on site are supported. In the Hainich National Park in Thuringia, the "Wunderbare Wanderbus" (“Wonderful Hiking Bus”) facilitates a stress-free and environmentally friendly experience of nature.
