World Heritage Region Wartburg Hainich

culture loves nature

In the middle of Germany

“Culture loves nature“ − the World Heritage Region Wartburg Hainich connects a culture that is rich in tradition with untouched nature in a unique way. The UNESCO World Heritage Wartburg and the UNESCO World Heritage Hainich are situated only a few kilometres away from each other, centrally placed in the middle of Germany.

Between Unstrut and Werratal, they merge into a touristic region. A motorway exit and an ICE train station guarantee a quick arrival from all directions. This area is culturally embedded between the Medieval Free City of Mühlhausen, the spa town and city of roses Bad Langensalza as well as the Luther and Bach Town of Eisenach with its Wartburg and the residence city Gotha. The Hainich region and the rivers Unstrut and Werra invite active holidaymakers to hiking, bicycling and paddling.

WARTBURG -  UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE

Since 2011, the Hainich National Park has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Old beech forests and primeval beech forests of the Carpathians and of other European regions“. It thus fits into the list of natural areas worthy of protection, together with the Grand Canyon, the Serengeti and the Galapagos Islands. Under the motto “Let Nature be Nature“, the “primeval forest in the middle of Germany” inspires its visitors with unique adventures.  In the untouched wilderness, you can marvel at age-old beech forest remains, impressive tree veterans and an exceptional diversity of species. Animal species that have become rare such as the wild cat, woodpecker or bat find an ideal habitat here. Friends of nature can discover the Hainich region from more than 20 signposted hiking trails and nature paths at any time of the year.
