Medieval Free City of Mühlhausen

The medieval Free City of Mühlhausen near the Hainich Park impresses its visitors by its diversity. The city wall, the historic old town and the 11 gothic churches define the cityscape.

Kings stayed in the former Free City of the Holy Roman Empire, famous persons such like the reformer Müntzer and the world-famous organist Johann Sebastian Bach put the city into the focus of history during their lifetimes. Even the Teutonic Order (the “Deutsche Orden”) played an important role for Mühlhausen. Churches like the Marienkirche with its five naves or the impressive Divi Blasii Church were developed under the Order’s influence. Today, Mühlhausen is known because of its cultural festivities which attract many thousands of people every year.
