Rural Community of Südeichsfeld

The rural community in the north of the World Heritage Region was established on 1st of December 2011. It covers the villages Diedorf, Faulungen, Heyerode, Hildebrandshausen, Katharinenberg, Lengenfeld unterm Stein, Schierschwende and Wendehausen.
The municipal association is located in the north of the World Heritage Region of Wartburg Hainich and constitutes the entrance to the Nature Park Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal. Surrounded by forests, hillsides, meadows and valleys, the rural community offers numerous opportunities for hiking and bicycling.
The touristic centre is the village of Lengenfeld unterm Stein with its landmark, the railway viaduct which is used by handcars today and – having approx. 30 thousand visitors per year – is an attraction for the region. During the summer months, the open-air swimming pool invites you to linger. The European Green Belt, the petrol road, leads from Hildebrandshausen to Katharinenberg. Here, the view of the place is marked by the ruin of the monastery church. The historic village greens in Diedorf are just as worth seeing as the Lourdes Grotto in Faulungen. The former watchtower in Wendehausen and the Gutsdorf Schierschwende are also worth an excursion. In Heyerode it is possible for winter sport fans to marvel at the winter landscape via well-defined cross-country skiing trails, starting from the country inn “Alter Bahnhof“. Another eye-catcher of the village is the historical border house.
